On Behalf of Individuals, Communities and the Earth
This intensive is envisioned as a circle, a small group of women and men gathered to devote themselves to the work of carrying healing at a time of great suffering, anxiety and fear. This is a critical moment. We must pioneer healing ways, become healers and/or healing presences in every aspect of our individual, social and political lives. This work provides opportunities for each participant to find the often pathless path to which he/she is called and set out to walk it.
Our national and world situation is very grave. We do not know what stresses and deprivations may afflict our communities and how we will meet them. But also these times are full of possibility. Healing can no longer be only a narrow profession or a particular vocation. Such professional or vocational training is no longer central to bringing heart, true gifts and new understanding to those, including ourselves, who are suffering or in danger. Healing is the heart’s intelligent answer to the great need to change culture and social institutions drastically so that there will be a viable future for all beings.
There is an urgent need to develop new skills and new language in order to recover and integrate indigenous and wisdom ways, to heed the visions, messages and instructions from spirit, to train ourselves rigorously in order to serve individuals, our communities and the earth. Once we asked how we might find relief from pain. Now we are asked what offerings might we make. Healing is a practice, a pathless path, a presence, a call to consciousness, a political act. In the development of these new and sometimes ancient paths, community, culture, society, our nation and our environment can be revived, restored and transformed.
19 Ways to the 5th World
This work is based on the 19 Ways to the 5th World, dream guidance and deep listening to earth and spirit. See the full text of the 19 Ways on Deena Metzger’s blog Ruin and Beauty.
Soul Work and Community Work
For 17 years, physicians, psychologists, therapists, health practitioners, healers, educators, social and cultural workers, ministers, shamans, peacebuilders, writers, journalists, musicians and others have gathered together to be with the land and be part of a courageous visioning community. This is a dedicated time to examine one’s own call. It is an opportunity to reflect on grief and disappointment, to confront the reality that many of our beleaguered institutions, social structures and ways of life are decaying, oppressive and failing. It is a time to find new forms.
Sometimes those who would heal do not have a particular form they practice, or they practice many forms, or recognize that they are in training to meet the broad, complex and demanding focus of Elder or Medicine Person. Dreams and visions, sometimes great afflictions, insist that we step out into unexplored territory. We are called in so many ways, and so we gather, study, and train.
Luminous and Soulful Paths
Healing concerns every aspect of our lives, including our alignment with the earth, the ways of spirit, ancestors and future beings. To be a healer, to bring healing to the community, to carry “healing spirits,” are activities of profound responsibility. We must proceed with consciousness, seek to learn the exact and exacting ways particular to each call, and engage in ethical reflection.
Indigenous people have always known how to live on the earth as part of a community of all beings, both visible and invisible. Imperialist and contemporary cultures have warred against this knowledge and its practice. On-going war, horrific technologies, physical, emotional and spiritual illnesses, and the devastation of the interconnected communities of the natural world, are the result.
We have to entirely change our minds and how we live. These new and also ancient ways are difficult and challenging, but they are also luminous and soulful paths. This week is an intensive immersion in a mystery school for the real world.
We Come Together as Allies
We come together as allies, allowing for solitude. There will be teaching, reflection and council. We will engage in writing, storytelling, dream telling, deep listening, bearing witness, strategizing, ethical reflection, prayer, meditation, silence, music, and divination. We will consider Remembering, Resistance and Restoration. We will honor the heart ways, the sacred and the land.
This intensive recognizes that the Story we have been given to live can be essential to our healing and spiritual paths. Learning to recognize Story is an essential part of this work. Spirit speaks to us through such Stories with a directness and intelligence that far exceeds the greatest human abilities, laying out events, experiences, mysterious circumstances, synchronicities and dreams. Heart, Beauty and wisdom invite us to learn to read these signs, recognize where we are being called and to what, and to understand the profound and exact instructions we’ve been given.
When conventional paths are not sufficient, it is a wondrous gift and surprise that our own stories, the circumstances of each day, and even of this week together, may be the most profound and detailed instructions on how to live with integrity as we are directed to bringing healing to the world.
WHAT: This is a circle of gifted and original individuals gathering together in a quiet and simple setting. The work is difficult, arduous, often risky, engaging, beautiful and thrilling. The work proceeds through formal and informal teaching, directed writing, circle work and individual sessions, solitude, time on the land, visioning, ritual, and ceremony as appropriate. We will also cooperate in the daily tasks of caring for each other and the land.
HOW: Dream group begins at 8:30 a.m. and we try to end the daily sessions by 10 p.m. There will be non-scheduled time for writing, hiking and musing, and also scheduled private appointments with Deena. The Intensive includes a day of silence on this land which was sacred to the ancient Tongva people.
WHERE: Topanga is a rural community in a canyon between the Pacific Ocean in Malibu and Woodland Hills in Los Angeles County. We will meet daily at Deena’s rustic house at the end of the road, surrounded on three sides by Topanga State Park. The land is inhabited by squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyote, birds and other creatures. There are many hikes leading into the park.
WHEN: The Healing and Healers’ Intensive begins at 12 noon on Saturday, June 17, 2017 and ends Friday, June 23, 2017 at 2 p.m.
ACCOMMODATIONS: We will suggest lodging at local hotels (20 minutes away by car) for those who will require it. A yurt, and a few small rooms on the land in Topanga provide quiet, shared writing spaces during the day.
FOOD: Communal meals, beautiful, simple and healthful mostly organic, mostly vegetarian, will be prepared daily at Deena’s house. We will all assist our chefs in the kitchen and help with clean-up and the dishes.
FEES, APPLICATION PROCESS, AND REGISTRATION: The fee for the Intensive is based on a sliding scale for tuition and food. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
A deposit reserves a space once the application process is completed. Payment plans are possible under special conditions. Please contact Jude Weber for more information.
