ReVisioning Medicine

ReVisioning Medicine has been gathering since 2004. Much has changed since then that challenges all of us. Since October 2018, myriad global life-threatening crises are calling medical and mental health practitioners to radically consider and re-consider our roles, practices and responsibilities. Cascading extremities of climate collapse, extinction, raging fires, increasing violence, hate crimes, acts of terrorism and psychopathology are making unprecedented demands upon healers to meet the consequent suffering and diseases. Inevitably, they manifest with familiar symptoms but may necessitate different responses.  So much more is required than we are prepared or trained to offer.

As it is our ethical and moral responsibilities to assess the dangers to all life, to all populations, human and non-human, as they are interdependent, let us gather and support each other in finding medicine and ways to meet the times as professionals and individuals upon whom the community rely.

ReVisioning Medicine hopes:

  • To create and restore medical ways which do no harm to individuals and the earth.
  • To assist and support medical people in becoming medicine people.
  • To meet the effects of climate dissolution, extinction, and the chaos and violence of the current social, political and economic disorder on our physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health
  • To restore and invite community into the healing process.
  • To transform medical ways so physicians and therapists can relate to patients and communities in the respectful and intimate ways that medicine people serve their communities.
  • To develop spirit and earth based medical and psychological practices.
  • To collaborate with and incorporate Indigenous wisdom traditions, ceremonies and rituals into medical treatment.
  • To explore, develop and teach the fullest use of Story as central to the process of diagnosis and treatment.
  • To examine the increasing limitations and distortions imposed on medical practice by different aspects of corporate and institutional medicine, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and government.
  • To confront issues of iatrogenesis, medication adverse effects, hospital errors, as well as the too common dangerous side-effects of prescribed medicines, and/or complications from medical or hospital treatments.
